Unfortunately, various threats endanger the sustainability of the vital ecosystem services provided by coral reefs, such as rising sea surface temperatures, which are a driving factor. <em>coral bleaching<\/em>, illegal coral harvesting, and damage to the reefs caused by tourism activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various efforts have been made, ranging from coral transplantation to mangrove planting to protect against sediment flow from the land. However, in reality, coral reef ecosystems continue to be increasingly threatened by various human activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this backdrop, the Center for Marine Studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), in collaboration with the Karang Lestari Foundation (YKLI), is working to raise public awareness\u2014especially among students\u2014about learning various methods that can support the optimal management of coral reef ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592-18x10.jpeg 18w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-09.44.592.jpeg 1599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This effort is realized through a training program. <em>Conceptual Model<\/em> Coral Reef Management Using <em>Participatory Modelling <\/em>or a coral reef management method based on community resilience.&nbsp; <em>Participatory Modelling<\/em> is considered one of the methods that has not been widely developed to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">training <em>Conceptual Model<\/em> Coral reef management using <em>Participatory Modeling<\/em> is to introduce basic concepts <em>system thinking<\/em> in coral reef ecosystem management, and applications <em>participatory modelling<\/em> to students, especially those interested in coral reef ecosystem research,\u201d said Head of the Center for Marine Studies at FMIPA UI, Dr. Riani Widiarti, M.Si., explaining the purpose of the activity on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">according to him, the introduction <em>participatory modelling<\/em> this is very important to be used in research related to coral reef ecosystems in particular, and marine ecosystems in general. This is because <em>Participatory modelling<\/em> it emphasizes local community knowledge of the current condition of the ecosystem and the threats it faces, thereby helping to inform decision-making in ecosystem management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The training, held at the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building of FMIPA UI \u2013 PT Pertamina, UI Campus, Depok, involved 30 participants consisting of teaching staff and students from the Geology and Geophysics Study Programs, the Department of Biology, the Department of Geography, the Master's Program in Marine Science, and the School of Environmental Science at UI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241-16x12.jpeg 16w, https:\/\/biologi.sci-ui.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-27-at-12.02.241.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Suryo Kusumo, as the Chair of YKLI and also a speaker at the training, delivered training material on the method <em>System theory \u2013 System thinking \u2013 Mental model, Causal loop diagram\/Conceptual Model<\/em> for coral reef ecosystem management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>System theory<\/em>, participants are introduced to the concept of \u2018system\u2019 and its characteristics. In the introduction section <em>System thinking<\/em>, participants are introduced to the important points in <em>System thinking, <\/em>namely the concept of the dependence of all elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis concept has been applied in ecological, economic, political, and even social research. Coral reef ecosystem management is viewed as a unified social-ecological system, where the social and ecological aspects are not separated,\u201d said Dr. Suryo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants were also introduced to the concept of mental models, which are an important component for understanding a system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA person\u2019s understanding of a mental model will influence the functionality of the system being developed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, through the method <em>Causal loop diagram, <\/em>Training participants are introduced in more depth to the thinking structure of conceptual models. <em>Causal loop diagram <\/em>used to explain the relationship between variables in a system, which will later be depicted in <em>system behaviour<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship between variables can add (+) or subtract (\u2212). The combination of relationships between variables in a system can produce a loop (+) or a loop (\u2212). <em>reinforcing<\/em>, and can also produce a loop (-) or <em>balancing<\/em>. Kusumawardhani, M.Si. as a research team at the Center for Marine Studies, FMIPA UI explained about the theory <em>Participatory Modelling <\/em>coral reef management. In this session, Anin explained the concept of a participatory approach, and the concept <em>participatory modelling <\/em>dalam<em> system dynamics.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c<\/em>With <em>participatory modelling <\/em>\u201cExchange of knowledge between stakeholders is key. Local knowledge of the community, in particular, is considered key to solving environmental problems,\u201d Anin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Focus Group Discussion<\/em> (FGD) is one of the most widely used methods in <em>participatory modelling <\/em>especially in composing<em> Causal loop diagram <\/em>of the system to be built. In this session, a case study of the use of <em>participatory modelling<\/em> in coastal management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FGD was conducted using scenarios <em>role-play<\/em> where each training participant is given a role to play and then discuss. The roles created include coastal communities consisting of fishermen, fishermen's wives, fish sellers, community leaders, tourism operators, and village officials. Participants were then invited to hold discussions according to their respective roles, with the theme of coastal area management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Community actors were asked to explain the current condition of coastal ecosystems, and simulate future conditions. Coastal communities were also asked to explain the relationship between each existing ecosystem, and what activities could be a threat to it.
