Profile

Prof. Nining Betawati Prihantini is an expert in field of systematics and utilization of microalgae. She is a member of Microbial Systematic and Prospecting (MSP) research group at Biology Department, FMIPA, UI. She earned his bachelor’s degree from the Universitas Indonesia in 1987. Then, she earned his master’s degree from the University of Tsukuba, Japan in 1998, and earned her doctorate from the University of Indonesia in 2015. Algae, especially native Indonesian microalgae, are subjects of her research that she consistently studies. She actively explores, isolates, and identifies microalgae from various habitats in Indonesia. One manifestation of her expertise is Universitas Indonesia Microalgae Culture Collection (UIMCC) which supports efforts to conserve microalgae biodiversity in Indonesia. She is also active in conducting research on utilization of microalgae bio-based materials in various fields, such as food, bioenergy, and bioremediation. Those researches contribute significantly to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also actively collaborates with experts, for example from the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Mechanical Engineering at UI. Her research results are actively published in leading national and international journals. Her research themes have been implemented in several courses, such as Microorganism Diversity, Biosystematics, and Algae Culture Technology. In community service, she often becomes a resource person for introduction of microalgae for example to elementary and high school students.
