Designing Mini-Hydro Powered Turbines, FMIPA UI Students Become Selected Solution Providers at the Asia Pacific Solution Forum

In an innovative move that illustrates the great potential of youth in sustainable technology, Adnan Hasyim Wibowo, a student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) Geophysics Study Program, designed an innovative water screw turbine that is able to utilize water energy efficiently: PARCIS (Portable Archimedes Screw).

This innovation in the small-scale hydroelectric power generation model has led to it achieving the predicate solution provider youngest in prestigious forum Asia Pacific Solution Forum (APSF) 2023. Through his innovation, Hasyim is considered to have brought new hope in the field of renewable energy.

PARCIS, to be selected solution initiative which is innovative and practical, while demonstrating FMIPA UI's commitment to addressing sustainable development issues, especially in the aspect of clean and renewable energy.

PARCIS is claimed to be the answer to the challenge of utilizing water energy in areas with poorly managed water resources. Inspired by the darkness that envelopes the area around rivers and gutters at night, Adnan and his team had the idea to change ‘waste energy‘ this is a source of sustainable lighting and energy.

Together with his team, namely Ruth Emmanuella Princsillia (Geophysics 2020), and Jawi Kuncoro Jaqti (Geophysics 2021), Adnan initially submitted PARCIS to take part in the competition, and has received recognition by winning first place, in Product Design Competition at the SOBAT Competition held by PT. United Tractor, in August 2022.

"PARCIS was initially just an idea for a competition, which thank God we managed to win," said Adnan.

“However, we are encouraged to develop this idea further, not only as an academic project, but also as a real solution that can bring positive impacts to society,” he added.

Adnan explained the advantage of PARCIS is that it does not require large amounts of water in its use, in addition, the Mini-Hydro power in PARCIS also makes this technology easy to carry and move when it will be used. Other advantages are of course low cost and environmentally friendly, because in its installation there is no need to damage the physical contour of nature.

"The components are a frame, turbine, powerhouse, and power distribution cable. So later the water will enter the frame, and move the turbine and then produce electricity that will be stored in the powerhouse, then distributed to loads such as street lights, with cables connected to the powerhouse," said Adnan explaining how his innovation works.

Dean of FMIPA UI Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D. appreciated the achievements of Adnan and his team. He said that the achievements of Adnan and his team are a representation of the capacity of FMIPA UI as an institution that plays an active role in producing innovative solutions to global problems.

“With the birth of PARCIS, they have taken the initiative in developing technology that is not only possible conceptually, but also has social and feasible to be implemented," said Prof. Dede.

Themed activities Accelerating Local Action for the SDGs in the Asia-Pacific" this, organized by Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) di Sunway Resort Hotel, Malaysia, pada 1-2 November 2023.

Every solution initiative presented in this forum are selected from a range of practical ideas and projects involving new technologies, methods, business models, institutional mechanisms, educational models, policy instruments, or a combination of these that can accelerate progress towards sustainable development.

At the same forum, Adnan shared the stage with other doctors and practitioners, presenting diverse ideas and solutions to a range of global issues. The discussions covered a range of topics, from energy renewal to environmental initiatives, providing important insights into steps that can be taken to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).

During the session feedback, Adnan received constructive feedback from eminent panelists. Among them were Prof. Woo Wing Thye, Vice President of SDSN Asia and Research Professor at Sunway University, and Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group. They provided in-depth insights into the applications and potential scalability of PARCIS, highlighting the importance of innovation in addressing renewable energy challenges.

In session talk show which was held after the presentation from para solution providers, hosted by Shazana Mochtar, PARCIS received praise from the panelists and participants. This initiative is recognized as one of the most attractive and solutions feasible to be duplicated.
