Apart from academic activities, the Biology Department of FMIPA UI also facilitates the development of students' hard and especially soft skills through student activities which are supported by student organizations at the department level, namely the Biology Department Student Association (HMD Biology). In line with the vision and mission of the Department of Biology, HMD Biology FMIPA UI prioritizes issues of conservation and prospecting for Indonesian biodiversity in its various activities.

Some examples of these activities are (1) UI Biofest which aims to introduce biodiversity to the general public, especially children and teenagers from elementary school (SD) to middle and high school (SMP/SMA) and (2) Biodiversity Day which aims to enliven the commemoration of World Biodiversity Day which is celebrated on May 22 every year. Unlike other departments at FMIPA and UI, the Biology Department also has a student organization under HMD Biology which also supports the vision and mission of the Biology Department, FMIPA UI.

The organization in question is called the  Semi-Autonomous Body (BSO). The student organizations in question are OMPT Canopy which accommodates Biology students' interest in plant diversity, KSHL Comata which accommodates Biology students who love wildlife, SIGMA-B which accommodates Biology students' interest in marine life, and Proteus which accommodates Biology students who loves the life of  microorganisms. These BSOs have made many contributions not only to the development of soft skills and knowledge of the students of their respective BSO members, but also to the surrounding communities (check here).
