FMIPA UI Mathematics Department Encourages Improvement of Statistical Literacy for High School and Equivalent Teachers

In facing the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era, one of the competencies that everyone must have is competency in statistical literacy. In elementary and secondary education levels, material or studies on statistics are given as part of mathematics subjects. This statistical literacy ability is very important for everyone in making decisions based on the information obtained, so that they have accuracy in making a conclusion. This literacy ability must be developed early on because it requires a very long process. Teacher competence in improving statistical literacy skills makes a very big contribution.

In order to strengthen the statistical literacy skills of high school mathematics teachers and equivalent, the Lecturer Team of the Statistics Study Program, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA, University of Indonesia held a community service. The community service packaged in the form of an online workshop was held in collaboration with the MGMP in the field of mathematics for the cities of Depok and Jakarta. This service was carried out on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.

The team from the Statistics Study Program, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UI consists of Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. as the head of the Mathematics Department, FMIPA UI, Prof. Dr. Titin Siswantining, D.E.A. as the head of the Statistics Study Program and facilitator, Dr. Dra. Yekti Widyaningsih, M.Si as keynote speaker, and facilitators Dra. Saskya Mary Soemartojo, M.Sc., Dra. Rianti Setiadi, M.Sc., Dr. Dra. Dian Lestari, DEA., Dra. Ida Fithriani, M.Sc., Dra. Siti Nurrohmah, M.Sc., Sarini Abdullah, S.Sc., M.Stats., Ph.D., Mila Novita, S.Sc., M.Sc., Rahmat Al Kafi, S.Sc., M.Sc. and Gianinna Ardaneswari, S.Sc., M.Sc. as moderators and assisted by 3 statistics study program students as assistants, namely Naufal Fahri Muhammad, Myra Azzahra Putri Syah Indra, and Kamal Muftie Yafi.

This workshop was attended by around 109 mathematics teachers from 204 registrants from various cities, such as Depok, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Palembang, and so on. The material presented in this workshop was Improving Statistical Literacy for High School Teachers and Equivalent: Normal Distribution. After this workshop, it is expected to support teacher learning and improve student learning outcomes that can be seen based on the National Assessment. Furthermore, this is an initial step for the public in general to gain an understanding of statistics correctly and properly.

The activity was opened by the Head of the Mathematics Department of FMIPA UI Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D., in his speech, Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. said that this service is a form of implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely Community Service.

"Hopefully, by implementing this workshop, it can provide benefits to teachers to improve their competence in teaching statistical literacy," said Prof. Alhadi Bustamam, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. in his speech.

After the opening ceremony, it was continued with a presentation of material by Dr. Dra. Yekti Widyaningsih, M.Si. and then the participants were divided into 3 groups to enter breakout room untuk diskusi dan pembahasan post-test bersama para fasilitator. Peserta workshop sangat antusias mengikuti workshop ini. Workshop diakhiri dengan penutupan oleh ketua Program Studi Statistika, Prof. Dr. Titin Siswantining, D.E.A.

"Strengthening statistical literacy for Teachers and Students is very important, not only to improve the value of national assessment results, but also the general ability to read and present data". said Dr. Dra. Yekti Widyaningsih, M.Si.

Specifically, he delivered material related to Normal Distribution. He provided several common misconceptions and delivered several things related to the curriculum concerning statistical material.
