FMIPA UI Undergoes ASIIN International Accreditation Visitation for Four Doctoral Study Programs

Depok, May 2, 2025 – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) is once again undergoing an international accreditation visitation stage by the institution  Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik (ASIIN) from Germany, which in English is known as Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This visitation is part of the assessment process for four doctoral study programs, namely Doctor of Physics, Doctor of Materials Science, Doctor of Chemistry, and Doctor of Biology.

The series of visitation activities took place over two days, on April 29-30, 2025 at the UI Depok Campus. The activities began with an opening meeting and discussion between the teams Expert from ASIIN with the UI Chancellor, university leaders, the Dean of FMIPA UI, faculty leaders, and coordinators of related study programs. This meeting took place in the Meeting Room on the 9th Floor of the Central Administration Building of the University of Indonesia.

In his remarks, UI Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU expressed his appreciation for the presence of Expert from ASIIN. He emphasized that international accreditation plays an important role in ensuring academic quality, especially for doctoral programs and encouraging the internationalization of faculties and universities. This accreditation will further enhance UI's academic reputation at the global level.

“Universitas Indonesia is a leading higher education institution committed to becoming a competitive center of excellence, playing a role in educating the nation, improving welfare, and contributing to global progress,” said Prof. Heri.

“Through this process, we also hope to continue to improve quality, instill a culture of quality throughout the university, and encourage cross-country academic collaboration.” he added.

In line with the UI Chancellor, the Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., said that this visitation was an important moment to conduct a comprehensive academic reflection.

“This activity is a form of in-depth evaluation of the curriculum, learning process, and research results so that they are always at high international standards. In addition, this is also an effort by FMIPA UI to improve the Main Performance Indicator (IKU) point 8, namely the number of international standard study programs,” said Prof. Dede.

Head of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit of FMIPA UI, Dr. Denny R. Silaban, M.Kom., added that the ASIIN assessment involves a comprehensive evaluation process of academic quality, curriculum structure, and relevance to the industrial world.

Until 2024, FMIPA UI has seven study programs that have achieved ASIIN accreditation, four Bachelor's programs, namely S1 Mathematics, S1 Physics, S1 Biology, and S1 Geography, and three Masters programs, namely S2 Physics, S2 Material Science, and S2 Biology. Dr. Denny hopes that the four doctoral study programs that have just undergone this visitation can also obtain ASIIN accreditation so that the academic quality of each level of education at FMIPA is confirmed internationally.

The ASIIN assessor team present at this visitation came from various well-known academic institutions in Germany and also included representatives of industry and students. They are:

  1. Prof. Dr. Robert Hänsch – Technical University of Braunschweig
  2. Prof. Dr. Jens Hartung – University of Kaiserslautern-Landau
  3. Prof. Dr. Alexander Heisterkampf – Leibniz University Hannover
  4. Prof. Dr. Heinrich Kern – Technical University Ilmenau
  5. Prof. Dr. Stefan Roth – RWTH Aachen University
  6. Nick Wisely – Industry representative
  7. Dina Riska – Doctoral Student, Mulawarman University
  8. Dr. A.S. Natalia Vega – Proof HERE

During the two-day visitation by the ASIIN assessor team, a series of activities were carried out to assess the quality of the proposed study programs. These activities included interviews and discussions with university leaders, faculty, department, and study program leaders, lecturers, students, alumni, and industry representatives. In addition, the assessors also directly reviewed facilities such as laboratories, lecture halls, libraries, and other supporting facilities.

The entire series of visitation activities was closed with a brief presentation of the interim assessment results by the team. Expert, which is compiled based on the guidelines and assessment criteria from ASIIN. The closing ceremony continued with a dinner and Nandak Ganjen dance performance performed by Density.

For your information, ASIIN is one of the most advanced and successful independent accreditation institutions. Until early 2025, ASIIN has accredited more than 6600 study programs from various universities from 67 countries in the world.
