3. Semi-Autonomous Body Organization
The Semi-Autonomous Body (BSO), now known as the Departmental Student Activity Unit (UKMD), is an organization that serves as a platform for students' interests and talents in specific study groups. The Biology Department of FMIPA UI has four UKMDs, namely:
- OMPT Canopy
The Student Organization for Plant Enthusiasts (OMPT) Canopy is one of the Biology Department Student Activity Units (UKMD) that focuses on plants as a biological object. This organization has been established for 30 years since May 17, 1994, and continues to thrive today. The name Canopy itself symbolizes the lush foliage of trees that protects the micro-ecosystem beneath it, reflecting the hope that the organization can provide benefits to the community it supports.
OMPT Canopy offers a sanctuary for plant-loving students to deepen their knowledge about plants while enjoying exciting adventures through hands-on field experiences in programs like 'Ngalap Canopy' and 'Ngalap Pelican'. In addition to field activities, information about plants and organizational programs can also be accessed through OMPT Canopy’s Instagram account @ompt_canopy for easier access. #GloriaPlantarian - KSHL Comata
The Wildlife Study Group (KSHL) Comata is a Biology Department Student Activity Unit (UKMD) that serves as a study group for animal enthusiasts and researchers, focusing on wildlife studies with five (5) main areas: mammals, herpetofauna, avifauna, insects, and chiroptera. KSHL Comata was established on December 31, 2001, with the aim of providing a platform for students interested in conducting wildlife research and conservation efforts. The organization seeks to develop biology students with expertise in wildlife research, establish a scientific information center (database) and discussion forum for biology students and other stakeholders involved in wildlife conservation, encourage student participation in preserving wildlife, and promote the importance of wildlife conservation to the public, especially younger generations and students. KSHL Comata offers various activities to support students passionate about wildlife, including field observations, seminars, research paper writing training, and the new member initiation program (PELITA), held at the Bodogol Nature Conservation Education Center (PPKA Bodogol), among many others. The Special Interest Group in Marine Biology Universitas Indonesia (SIGMA-B UI) is a Biology Department Student Activity Unit (UKMD) that has been established since 1988. SIGMA-B UI serves as a platform to accommodate, channel, and develop the interests of Biology Department students at FMIPA UI in the field of marine biology and its conservation.
ChatGPT said: Regarding Indonesia's abundant marine resources, SIGMA-B UI studies marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, reef fish, macrozoobenthos, seagrass, and various techniques for collecting data in the ocean. At SIGMA-B UI, students will learn to swim, snorkel in the sea, admire the beauty of coral reefs, go island-hopping, study marine species identification, campaign on ocean issues, build networks with other marine organizations, and of course, be guided by senior members or professional alumni. 4. Student Activities
The UI Biology Department Student Association (HMD) oversees several excellent activities that are routinely held every year, namely:
- UI Biology Festival
The UI Biology Festival is an annual biology festival featuring different themes each year, typically focusing on conservation issues and current environmental concerns. Last year, UI Biofest was held for the 12th time with a theme centered on the conservation of the Javan Gibbon (Hylobates moloch). In the previous two years, the festival also highlighted the conservation of endangered animals, such as the Mahakam Dolphin (UI Biofest 11th) and the Sumatran Elephant (UI Biofest 10th). Unlike previous years, this year's 13th UI Biofest will focus on the theme of climate change.UI Biofest itself has several series of events, namely first there is a seminar on issues related to the theme. Second, a pre-event to promote UI Biofest, introduce, educate and increase public awareness of conservation and environmental issues. Third, the Biology Olympiad for junior high school to high school with an award certificate that has been registered with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. Fourth, Biology in the World of Children which is an educational and fun activity with children aged 5-12 years, and as the closing of all UI Biofest activities there will be a charity concert. All profits from this activity will be donated to agencies/institutions engaged in conservation and the environment.
- Company Visit
Company Visit is a flagship program under the responsibility of the Education and Scientific Department of HMD Biologi UI. This annual event involves visits to companies or industries that apply biological sciences. This year, the Company Visit was held in collaboration with PT. Ajinomoto Indonesia on January 9, 2024. The event included several activities, such as a product presentation, a company history tour, a product taste test, and an opportunity to observe the production process firsthand. - Introduction to the Department of Biology (PDB)
Introduction to the Biology Department is an event for new students of the Biology Department, aimed at introducing the academic system and the entire academic community within the department. This program runs for one month, featuring various weekly activities such as field observations, mental health seminars, and other engaging activities.
