Three Geophysics students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), namely Adnan Hasyim Wibowo, Ruth Emmanuella Prinscillia, and Naufal Faiz Dermawan, managed to carve out brilliant achievements at the Young Professional Club (YPC) PETRONAS 2023 event. The three friends won the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) category in the competition organized by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS).
This was announced on July 24, 2023, at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition, Tangerang, during the award ceremony for the winners and prize presentation.
The 2023 YPC PETRONAS Competition is a prestigious competition participated by 16 student teams throughout Indonesia. This competition category is included in the national scale, where participants are challenged to complete case studies with an approach design thinking. The case studies given to the participants are tailored to five different categories, namely Subsurface, Drilling, Exploration, and HSE. Each team is given 2 weeks to complete the case study.
The team led by Adnan successfully demonstrated their solidarity in undergoing the competition. With the support of their supervisor, Charlie Wu, Ph.D., they faced the competition with enthusiasm and dedication. Effective division of tasks was also one of the keys to their success in completing the case study well.
The innovation brought by this team also managed to attract the attention of the judges. They presented the idea KERIS Decarbonization Strategy: Integrated Triangulation Initiative as Advanced GHG Emission Reduction in Upstream Sector of Oil and Gas Industry, namely the greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy which is likened to the 3 main parts of the traditional Indonesian weapon, namely the keris. The three strategies in question are changing the power sources for operation, carbon capture utilization and storage system, and green financing.
This innovative idea arose from the awareness of the negative impacts of emissions in the oil and gas industry that need to be minimized, and the team's desire to realize a cleaner future environment through decarbonization.
“We recognize that the sector upstream "In this industry, there are the most crucial and significant emission problems, so my friends and I designed a decarbonization strategy with a triangulation approach from the three solution areas," said Adnan.
The ideas they offer are not only considered creative and relevant, but also logical, practical, and sustainable. Previously, the Geophysics student team conducted an analysis and comparison of various solutions in the three areas, comparing their impacts, efforts, and implementation projections.
They also provide recommendations offsetting carbon that can be done by the oil and gas industry by considering the aspects of risk and return on investment. That way, the solutions they offer are more effective in solving existing problems.
One of the challenges faced by the team was the short time given by the organizers to complete the case study, amidst the busy schedules of the different team members. However, the team still showed their dedication to completing it well.
"From the beginning, the three of us actually had a strong determination to build a team to take part in the same competition because we felt we had the same views. Especially in this competition, where the topics raised were very similar and we saw a golden opportunity to apply our creative ideas," said Naufal, one of the team members.
"In addition, PETRONAS is one of Malaysia's national oil and gas companies that has an important role in the energy industry that has operated in various parts of the world. That makes us even more enthusiastic to face challenges and achieve brilliant achievements in this competition," he continued.
Another member, Ruth, also gave a message to other FMIPA students to continue learning and face challenges with confidence.
"There are many benefits that we get by participating in the competition, such as channeling ideas, increasing knowledge and relationships, honing creativity, presentation skills, and many more. My friends and I hope that other FMIPA UI students will continue to hone their knowledge and skills, because only by embracing challenges can we achieve the best potential that exists within us." He said to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.
The proud achievement of the FMIPA UI Student Team proves that perseverance, collaboration, and creativity can lead to brilliant achievements. In addition to improving academic grades, they also get the opportunity to interact with professionals and industry practitioners through competitions.
Young Professional Club (YPC) PETRONAS 2023 is a competition with the theme of sustainable development in the oil and gas energy sector, organized by the Young Professional Club (YPC) PETRONAS CARIGALI INDONESIA OPERATIONS with the main theme "Securing Sustainable Values towards NCZE 2050".
competition design thinking This will give participants the opportunity to work in teams to solve real cases of various oil and gas industry problems, and find correlations with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
