Master’s Student of Medical Physics FMIPA UI Wins the IAEA World Infographic Design Competition

Another proud achievement has been made by a student from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), on the international stage. Antonius Fajar Adinegoro, a student of the Master’s Program in Medical Physics, won 1st place in the Infographic Design Contest organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an international atomic energy organization based in Vienna, Austria. The official announcement of the winners was delivered by the IAEA via personal email to the participants on October 9, 2025.

The competition is part of the international conference “International Conference on Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies: Building the Future in an Evolving World”, which will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from December 1–4, 2025. The contest aims to raise public awareness of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) to nuclear and radiological emergencies through engaging and easy-to-understand visual communication.

From Medical Physics to Visual Communication

In this international competition featuring participants from various countries, Anton stood out with his infographic titled “Guidelines for Medical Physicists in Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies.” The work highlights the role of medical physicists in nuclear and radiological emergency situations, particularly in assessing radiation dose magnitude and conducting patient decontamination processes.

“I created this infographic to help the public and medical personnel understand how medical physicists can respond quickly and safely during a nuclear emergency,” said Anton.

“I was interested in joining this competition because it combines two things I love: medical physics and visual communication. The challenge was to make a highly technical topic easy to understand,” he added.

Rigorous Selection, Global Recognition

The IAEA infographic competition was held online from July 16 to August 31, 2025, through the official conference website. During this period, participants submitted their infographic works to be evaluated by a panel of judges. The assessment criteria included message clarity, visual quality, originality of ideas, technical accuracy, and the effectiveness in communicating the concept of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR). Out of hundreds of participants from various countries, Anton successfully ranked among the world’s top five finalists and was ultimately selected as the grand winner.

As a reward, the winners will be invited to attend the EPR 2025 Conference in Riyadh, with all expenses covered by the IAEA. Their works will also be showcased at the international forum.

Independent Work with an Academic Foundation

Anton created the infographic independently, drawing on his academic experience and clinical practice in the Master’s Program in Medical Physics, FMIPA UI. Before designing, he conducted in-depth research by studying official IAEA guidelines and technical references to ensure that the information presented was accurate yet easy to understand.

“The whole process took about three days, from research and concept development to finalizing the design,” said Anton.

FMIPA UI’s Pride on the World Stage

The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., expressed his appreciation for the achievement. “We are proud that FMIPA UI students have once again demonstrated their excellence on the world stage. This victory reflects not only academic capability but also creativity and awareness of global issues,” said Prof. Dede.

“Anton’s achievement proves that medical physics is not only relevant in the clinical field but also plays an important role in public education and preparedness for radiation and nuclear risk
