The student team from the Geophysics Study Program (Prodi) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), Cecilia Patra Dewanty (Geophysics 2019), Kholifatun Nisa (Geophysics 2019), and Stella Eulia Andoko (Geophysics 2021) successfully won an award at the prestigious Petronas Design Thinking Competition with the Exploration subtopic held by the Petronas Young Professionals Club (YPC).
Petronas Design Thinking Competition is a competition held by Petronas Young Professionals Club (YPC), which aims to encourage participants to apply the concept design thinking in solving problems related to the oil and gas industry. There are several subtopics that are competed, namely Exploration, Sub-surface, Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), and Drilling.
There are more than 30 teams from various universities in Indonesia participating in this competition. The competition is divided into four categories based on subtopics, where each category produces 4 winning teams.
The announcement of the winners on July 26, 2023 via participant email. In addition, the winners are also invited to attend the prize-giving event directly at the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) Convention & Exhibition 2023 at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition, Tangerang. The three were awarded as champions of the Exploration category.
"The steps we take start from dividing up tasks, interpreting seismic data from the horizon data provided, and converting it to... time & depth map and provide petrophysical analysis according to the objectives of this competition. In addition, we are also guided by Ayunda Aulia Valencia S.T., M.T., Ph.D. as a supervisor," explained Stella.
The innovation they presented was entitled “Exploration of Oil Field “Nike” in the North Sumatra Basin”. Within a limited period of 2 weeks, they conducted an analysis of the probability evaluation of the success of the play system and analyzed the risk factors. This was done by creating a time and depth structure map, conducting a petrophysical analysis, and calculating the reservoir volumetric.
Challenges are an inseparable part of a competition. One of the main challenges faced by Cecilia and her team was the limited data available and the lack of detail to provide a deeper analysis. However, the team managed to overcome this challenge with determination and enthusiasm in producing relevant and comprehensive solutions.
Through this valuable experience, the team learned about the countless benefits of participating in the Petronas Design Thinking Competition. Cecilia, as the team leader, shared her experience that their participation not only broadened their horizons, but also helped build a valuable network of relationships with fellow students and professionals in the oil and gas industry. In addition, this competition provided a valuable opportunity for them to apply the knowledge they had learned in class to real situations.
The experience of the Geophysics Student Team in the Petronas Design Thinking Competition is concrete evidence that competitions are an important place for students to develop and hone their potential. The enthusiasm and dedication to continue learning and innovating are the keys to success in facing various challenges in the future.
For your information, Young Professional Club (YPC) PETRONAS 2023 is a competition organized by Young Professional Club (YPC) PETRONAS CARIGALI INDONESIA OPERATIONS with the main theme "Securing Sustainable Values towards NCZE 2050".
This design thinking competition will give participants the opportunity to work in teams to solve real cases of various problems in the oil and gas industry, and find correlations with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The competition period is held from June 21 to July 20, 2023 online, where the best teams will be invited to the Petronas Booth at 2023 IPA Convex at ICE BSD Tangerang for the handover of prizes.
