FMIPA UI Launches Medical Physicist Professional Study Program to Support National Health System

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) officially launched the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program on Saturday (24/5), in an event held at the Prof. Dr. Ir. Soemantri Brodjonegoro Hall. This launch marks a strategic step by FMIPA UI in strengthening the role of academics and professionals in the health sector, especially in the safe and effective use of radiation technology.

The event was opened with remarks from Prof. Dr. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro, who explained the long history of the development of Medical Physics at FMIPA UI since 2000. In his presentation, Prof. Supriyanto emphasized that the establishment of this professional program is a response to the national need for certified and competent Medical Physicists.

"The establishment of the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program is the result of long and consistent work for more than two decades. We believe that the presence of this program will strengthen the national health service ecosystem by providing trained, certified experts who are able to answer the challenges of the development of modern medical technology."

Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph. D. in his speech expressed his appreciation for the progress of the Medical Physics group of FMIPA UI. He hopes that the launch of this program will be a milestone in FMIPA UI's contribution to supporting the national health system, especially in the field of radiation-based health technology.

"We believe that higher education must be able to answer the needs of the times, and today we prove that FMIPA UI is ready to be a pioneer. Of course, we hope that in the future, the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program can become a model for developing a solid and sustainable basic science-based health profession." said Prof. Dede.

The launch of the program was symbolically marked by the knocking of the gavel by the Dean of FMIPA UI, marking the official start of the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program FMIPA UI.

The introductory session was filled by Dr. Lukmanda Evan Lubis, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., Lecturer in the Department of Physics FMIPA UI and Chairperson of the Indonesian Medical Physicists Alliance (AFISMI), who introduced the importance of the Medical Physicist profession in the modern health service system and the need for a structured education and training path.

The introductory session was opened by Dr. Lukmanda Evan Lubis, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., as Chairperson of the Indonesian Medical Physicists Alliance (AFISMI). In his presentation, he emphasized the urgency and strategic role of the Medical Physicist profession in the modern health care system, especially in supporting patient safety and the effectiveness of high-tech therapies such as radiotherapy, medical imaging, and management of advanced medical equipment. He also highlighted the importance of structured and nationally and internationally standardized education and training pathways, in order to produce competent, professional Medical Physicists who are able to answer the challenges of the increasingly rapid development of medical technology.

"The presence of Medical Physicists in the world of health, especially in the modern era like today, is not just a complement, but an important part in ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of the use of medical technology. For that, we need to prepare human resources through focused and sustainable education and training," he said.

The main event presented national speakers from various strategic institutions. Mukhlisin, S.T., M.Si., Director of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Substances Supervision Regulation from BAPETEN, highlighted the importance of the role of Medical Physicists in maintaining radiation safety. Dr. Akbar Azzi, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., as the Head of the Study Program, explained the education structure and curriculum designed to produce professional and competent graduates. Meanwhile, Wahyu Edy Wibowo, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., Sp.RT, Chair of the Indonesian Medical Physicists College, discussed the competency regulation system and professional competency test mechanism. From the regulatory side, Indah Lestariningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Council of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, explained the role of the Council in the registration process and granting of practice permits for Medical Physicists in Indonesia.

The interactive panel discussion that took place after the speaker's presentation showed the high enthusiasm of participants from various institutions and professional circles.

In closing, Prof. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro presented certificates of appreciation to all speakers and moderators as a form of appreciation for their contributions in strengthening the profession of Medical Physicists in Indonesia.
