Successfully Identifying New Genetic Resources in Nisi Chicken, Alfi Sophian Earns Doctoral Degree

Alfi Sophian from the Biology S3 study program received a doctorate with cum laude predicate after successfully identifying new genetic resources in the Nisi chicken. (Gallus gallus Domesticus). In the open session of the University of Indonesia's doctoral promotion held on December 27, 2022, Alfi delivered his dissertation entitled "Study of Nisi Chicken (Gallus gallus Domesticus) Based on Morphometric, Bioacoustic, and Genetic Analysis”.

This research was conducted in Gorontalo Province, located in Bone Bolango Regency, Pinogu Village. Pinogu Village was chosen as the research location because in the preliminary test conducted, information was obtained that nisi chicken was not found in other areas besides the village.

"This research aims to be a source of information about the study of nisi chicken so that the potential of nisi chicken as a local chicken typical of Gorontalo can be raised to the public and recognized by the community," said Alfi in front of the examiners.

According to Alfi, a study on native Indonesian chickens is very necessary considering that the Nisi chicken is a genetic resource that has not been explored. In conducting this research, Alfi admitted to facing challenges such as information about the species being quite limited, not to mention that scientific literature on this species has never been written for publication. Even so, the man born in BauBau said that his research was able to produce very good potential for novelty value.

"The limited information about this chicken makes this research important to be conducted so that it can be one source of information in supporting research on the diversity of local chickens in Indonesia," he said.

Meanwhile, the novelty value in question is information in the form of documentation and analysis of study results as a description of the morphometric characteristics of this type of chicken species so that it is better known by the public, New information in the form of bioacoustic data that can be used as a source of information to recognize nisi chickens based on the characteristics of their distinctive crowing patterns, and New information about the diversity of IGF-1 genes owned by nisi chickens, so that it can be a reference and reference for further research on the nisi chicken species.

Alfi said that his research has theoretical benefits in the field of biodiversity, namely as a contribution of information on one of the new genetic resources that has been successfully explored.

"By obtaining information about this Nisi chicken, the diversity of local chicken strains in Indonesia will also increase," he added.

Furthermore, he explained, his research raised three types of approaches, namely morphometric, bioacoustic, and genetic analysis. Based on the three analyses, operationally it has the aim of knowing the morphometric diversity, as well as the most influential morphometric parameters, knowing the bioacoustic analysis pattern of the crowing sound of the nisi chicken to recognize and distinguish nisi chickens from other local chickens. In addition, the diversity of the IGF-1 gene owned by nisi chickens can also be known as information that can be used for nisi chicken studies in the years to come.

Previously, the 36-year-old man had passed the pre-promotion exam stage on October 21, 2022. His success in pursuing education and research in this doctoral study program cannot be separated from the guidance of Prof. Dr. Drs. Abinawanto, M.Sc. (Professor of Biology, FMIPA UI) as the promoter and Dr. Mariah Ulfah, Spt., M.Sc.Agr. (Faculty of Animal Husbandry, IPB), and Astari Dwiranti, M.Eng., Ph.D. (Biology, FMIPA UI) as Co-Promoters.
