Kamitetep may sound unfamiliar to some, but for people in tropical regions like Indonesia, these small creatures are considered household pests. Kamitetep is the local name for small insects from the Staphylinidae family, which are often found around homes and in damp areas. Although small and seemingly harmless, these insects can cause itching. Because of this, it's important to recognize the symptoms of contact with kamitetep and know how to repel them.
Symptoms of Itching Caused by Kamitetep
Dr. Dra. Ratna Yuniati, M.Si., a lecturer in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (UI), stated that there are indeed visible signs on the skin from contact with kamitetep. "Signs on the skin of kamitetep exposure can include a rash or itchy red spots," said Dr. Ratna, Thursday (July 10, 2025). She added that for some people with sensitive skin, signs can include mild allergic reactions, irritation, or swelling. "Usually, the skin can heal on its own within 3-7 days," she continued.
When the kamitetep leaves
Before learning how to get rid of kamitetep, Dr. Ratna said it's important to know when these insects emerge. This way, homeowners can anticipate their appearance. Ratna explained that kamitetep generally appear during the rainy season or at the beginning of the rainy season.
"This is because the humid conditions in the rainy season favor the development of larvae and the survival of their sacs," she said. "High humidity causes dust, hair, and organic debris to accumulate more in the corners of the house, which become a food source for the larvae," she added. Furthermore, she added, during the rainy season, houses tend to be more enclosed, resulting in less than optimal ventilation. Poor ventilation makes the house an ideal place for kamitetep to thrive.
"Meanwhile, during the dry season, kamitetep activity can decrease due to dry air and faster temperatures, which can inhibit larval development or cause the sacs to disappear," she added.
How to Get Rid of Kamitetep from Your Home Based on the explanation above, it's known that Kamitetep are more common during the rainy season in Indonesia. Once you know when they appear, she explained that the way to get rid of Kamitetep is simply by cleaning. "Don't just clean the area where the moths are, but also clean the surrounding area," said Dr. Ratna.
She recommends sweeping and mopping the house regularly, especially in corners of rooms, under beds, closets, and storage areas.
"Vacuum carpets and floors to remove loose hair, dust, and dead skin flakes (food for Kamitetep larvae)," said Dr. Ratna. "Open the windows daily to prevent excessive humidity," she added.
She also recommends using a dehumidifier or fan if the air is too humid. Regularly cleaning the bathroom and kitchen is also important, as these two rooms are known to be damp and rarely maintained.
She also advises against letting dirty clothes pile up for too long, as they can become a breeding ground for larvae. "Use camphor or mothballs. These ingredients can help repel moths in our skin and keep our cupboards or storage areas fresh," he concluded.
