FMIPA UI Teaches How to Farm Tubifex Worms Using Waste in Sukarame Village, Pandeglang

The Community Service Team from FMIPA UI, led by Abinawanto along with eight students from the Departments of Geography and Biology, conducted a socialization event on the development of tubifex worm and water flea farming using livestock waste, under the project name Tubifarm Uncal. The event took place on Sunday, October 2, 2022, in Sukarame Village, Carita, Pandeglang, Banten.

In its implementation, the community service team collaborated with the Pandu Cendikia Foundation, four lecturers from the Department of Biology at FMIPA UI—namely Retno Lestari, Ratna Yuniati, Dian Hendrayanti, and Windri Handayani—the UI Scout team with ten students, and received support from the Directorate of Community Engagement and Empowerment at Universitas Indonesia (DPPM UI).

Program implementation Tubifarm Uncal The activity began with a socialization session on the use of catfish farming waste for the cultivation of tubifex worms and water fleas. It was then followed by a practical session on feeding tubifex worms using coconut pulp.

Abinawanto, as the head of the community service program, explained that fish farming is one of the main economic sectors in Sukarame Village. However, its development still faces challenges, one of which is feed provision. “Initially, tubifex worms used as fish feed were only obtained from the wild, such as from rivers or waterways. Another challenge is that farming tubifex worms for fish feed has not yet been widely practiced and is only done individually for personal fish consumption,” added Juhri in his statement on Sunday (October 2).

In closing, Rika, the Head of Sukarame Village, expressed her gratitude to the community service team from Universitas Indonesia for the Tubifarm Uncal program that was introduced to the local fish farmers. She hopes that the Tubifarm Uncal program will be beneficial to the community and serve as a new business opportunity in Sukarame Village.
