Through their written work, UI FMIPA students express their ideas about a just natural mining industry.

Adnan Hasyim Wibowo, a student in the Geophysics Study Program at the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UI), expressed his ideas on equitable energy and mining through a paper entitled "Realizing Inclusive Natural Mining Amidst Increasingly Massive Development."

Adnan's interest in the issue of inclusivity in the energy and mining sectors prompted him to develop these ideas into a paper. Furthermore, he admitted that he often finds that the energy and mining sectors neglect other issues closely related to their processes and sustainability, such as social issues and community empowerment.

“Usually people think about environmental issues kan "I've always had issues related to mining, but I felt that was a classic issue. Other issues closely related to energy and mining are social issues and community empowerment. So, I became interested in connecting and addressing inclusive issues with the energy and mining sectors, embracing justice," Adnan told the FMIPA UI Public Relations team about the background to his idea.

In his paper, he outlined the potential for New and Renewable Energy (NRE) in the form of 450 MW of mini hydro, 50 GW of biomass, and 4.80 kWh/m2/day of solar energy, along with seven existing smelters as of the end of 2018, representing a small fraction of the potential for energy and mining utilization in Indonesia. The abundance of energy and mineral resources should improve public welfare, particularly in areas supplying the country's energy and mineral resources.

Unfortunately, Adnan said, this has not yet been fully realized because labor absorption in the ESDM sector is suboptimal, and some groups remain marginalized, one of which relates to the inclusion of people with disabilities. Based on data from the 2018 National Economic and Social Survey (Susenas), the labor force participation rate (TPAK) for people with disabilities was only 31.63%.

This is an indication of the lack of involvement of people with disabilities in the ESDM and mining sectors. This situation creates inequality in development and could hinder the realization of the SDGs in Indonesia, particularly those related to inclusive development.

He believes this role can be realized, among other things, through legal regulations (taking into account input from the Center for Energy and Mining Law Studies), the provision of disability-friendly mining facilities, and knowledge and skills training for people with disabilities. The ESDM and mining sectors should promote prosperity, not just provide a platform for those who are "normal." When "equal" mining can be realized, the word "people" will be complete in the phrase "people's welfare."

Adnan then presented his idea to the Energy and Mining Ideas Competition at the end of January 2022, winning third place. The Energy and Mining Ideas Competition is a national-level scientific essay competition organized by the Center for Law and Mining Studies (PUSHEP). In 2022, the competition carries the theme "Student Ideas for Equitable Energy and Mining."
