The Sustainable Rangers Team Wins the ASEAN Geospatial Challenge 2022 Title

Depok, July 12, 2022. The Sustainable Rangers team, led by Bella Hena Samira (FMIPA, class of 2019), achieved success in the global competition, the ASEAN Geospatial Challenge 2022. Bella and her members, Najma Khofifah (FMIPA, class of 2019), Devina Azalya (FMIPA, class of 2019), and Maurice Efroza (FT, class of 2019), became one of the teams representing Indonesia in the international competition. Previously, the four University of Indonesia students had won the National Champion title at the Indonesian Geospatial Challenge 2021.

The ASEAN Geospatial Challenge is a competition that promotes the use of geospatial technology and information to support Southeast Asian countries in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to the University of Indonesia, 26 other teams from five Southeast Asian countries participated in the competition.

At the ASEAN Geospatial Challenge, Bella and her team carried out an innovation project called One Map, Our Sustainability. This project utilizes platform social mapping which gives everyone the freedom to contribute to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the ArcGis application. One Map, Our Sustainability emphasizing the inclusive nature of SDG equality, “no one left behind.” This innovation led to Sustainable Rangers becoming the winner Merit Award or equivalent to 3rd Place.

To the FMIPA UI public relations team, Bella revealed that the platform One Map, Our Sustainability is a further development of innovation Hero of Sustainability, which is a digital map project based on “Priority Ranking” for all provinces in Indonesia based on indicators for each SDG goal. Hero of Sustainability is the brainchild of Bella and her previous team of the same name at the Esri User Conference Map Gallery 2021 in the USA.

“People are starting to get interested in hero of sustainability. Their questions about team contributions hero of sustainability and the direct impact on efforts to achieve the SDGs targets, that is our motivation to carry out one map our sustainability this," said Bella, explaining the background to its emergence One Map, Our Sustainability to the FMIPA UI public relations team via the Whatsapp application.

If on Hero of Sustainability The public can see which provinces are advanced and which are lagging behind through the priority rankings in each province based on the data that has been collected, which is different from One Map, Our Sustainability.

Platform One Map, Our Sustainability allows the public to write their contributions in their respective provinces' sections. Written contributions can also be read by other users.

"We also provide the geographical side, so after we fill in our contribution, a sign will appear that we have filled in the form, our location can also be known, we can also read stories from our friends about their contributions on the map," added the SDGs Student Ambassador (UN Sustainable Development Goals Campus Ambassador).

From all the contribution data collected on the platform, Bella said, spatial analysis can be carried out to map potential areas in Indonesia, thus making it easier for users to make decisions related to spatial aspects.

"This research can help efforts to achieve equitable development goals in various aspects, and to involve the community in contributing effectively," said Miss Tangsel 2017.

Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (UI), Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., expressed his support and appreciation for the team. He stated, "We appreciate the UI team's victory and encourage other students at UI to continue innovating in their respective fields of study. We hope that this breakthrough by the UI team can be developed and used as a reference or database for universities, the central government, regional governments, and related institutions, in implementing ideal policies to address various issues in their respective regions."
