Quality assurance and fulfillment of quality standards in the implementation of educational programs is very important in educational institutions, as an effort to be accountable to stakeholder and improving services to students.
In addition to participating in national and international academic accreditation, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Indonesia (UI) recognizes the importance of laboratory accreditation as a supporting facility for educational activities. Therefore, since 2021, the Faculty, in coordination with the Academic Quality Assurance Unit (UPMA) and Academic Affairs, has begun preparing laboratories within the Faculty for submission to the National Accreditation Committee (KAN) for accreditation.
After registering two laboratories, UI Chem and the Center for Medical Physics and Biophysics (CMPB), for KAN accreditation, several requirements and procedures need to be better understood. Therefore, on Wednesday (April 6, 2022), the UPMA unit, chaired by Dr. Denny R. Silaban, M.Kom., held a KAN accreditation socialization event for Department Heads and Laboratory Heads/PICs within the Faculty. This socialization was also open to heads/PICs of laboratories and facilities within UI.
Also present at the event were Dr. Dwi Marta Nurjaya, S.T., M.T. The event was opened by Dr. Tito Latif Indra, S.Si., Director of Operations and Facilities Maintenance at the University of Indonesia, and Prof. Winarto, Head of the Quality Assurance Unit of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia.
The socialization was opened by Dr. Tito Latif Indra, S.Si., Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration.
In his remarks, Dr. Tito stated, "We hope this meeting will benefit the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UI and its efforts to meet KAN standards for its laboratories."
Dr. Tito also mentioned that the Faculty currently has 38 laboratories, consisting of Teaching Laboratories and Service Laboratories.
The resource person, Fajarina Budiantari, S.TP., M.Si., Director of Laboratory Accreditation at the National Standardization Agency (BSN), welcomed the Faculty's efforts to submit several of its laboratories for accreditation. She considered this effort a commitment worthy of appreciation.
"I am proud and welcome the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UI's efforts to apply for accreditation. We also mentioned earlier that the Faculty is committed to improving the quality of its laboratories," Fajarina said.
On the same occasion, Fajarina explained the KAN Profile, Standardization & Conformity Assessment, Competency Verification of Conformity Assessment Bodies, KAN Accreditation Policies, Requirements, and Procedures.
The FMIPA UI laboratories currently undergoing the KAN accreditation process are the UI-Chem Laboratory from the Department of Chemistry and the Center for Medical Physics and Biophysics (CMPB) Laboratory from the Institute of Applied Sciences (LST). This was conveyed by Dr. Denny, Head of UPMA, to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.
"So, the plan is for the UI Chem Laboratory to undergo a visit in June, and the CMPB Laboratory is currently completing the required administrative documents," he said.
