The Quacquarelli Symonds Ranking Institute has again released the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking (QS WUR) by Subject. This year, through its official website /www.topuniversities.com/subject-rankings/2023, QS WUR places UI in the top position among universities in the country for the Broad Subjects and Narrow Subjects categories.
In the QS release, UI collected the highest scores in three of the five Broad Subject categories. Of the Broad Subjects, two of them recorded rankings for 4 Narrow Subjects or fields of science originating from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UI.
The Broad Subject categories in question are Natural Sciences and Life Sciences & Medicine.
In the Broad Subject Natural Sciences category, the fields of Geography, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy are included as Narrow Subjects in it. Geography is recorded as still maintaining its position for the past four years, namely at rank 151 - 200. Physics & Astronomy also occupies the same rank as last year, namely rank 501 - 550.
This year, the Mathematics field adds to the long list of fields in the Broad Subject Natural Sciences category at a ranking of 501 – 530.
Meanwhile, the field of Biological Sciences in the Broad Subject Life Sciences & Medicine category, still remains at rank 551 – 600.
UI Chancellor, Prof. Ari Kuncoro S. E., M. A., Ph.D. in his release on March 23, 2023 said, “This achievement that places UI as the best in Indonesia, when viewed from the release issued by QS WUR by Subject 2023, spurs UI to be even better in the future. Thank you for all the contributions made by the UI academic community. Together we are moving towards the target of being the best and most respected university in ASEAN.”
He hopes that in all subject areas UI will be the best.
Dean of FMIPA UI Dede Djuhana, Ph.D. expressed his gratitude for the achievement. In line with the rector, he also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the academic community of FMIPA UI for their efforts and contributions in improving academic reputation both at the national and international levels.
Moreover, said the Dean, improving academic reputation is the vision and mission of FMIPA UI which must be realized together.
"Alhamdulillah, we are very grateful because improving this academic reputation is our vision and mission at FMIPA UI. With the addition of fields of science at FMIPA UI that are recorded in the ranking, of course we are optimistic that in the future this success will be followed by other fields of science," said Dean Dede to the FMIPA UI public relations team.
However, he emphasized to the staff and the academic community to continue to be enthusiastic in increasing research publications, as well as increasing involvement in international academic activity agendas.
"Collaboration with domestic and international partners in producing creative innovations is also important to continue to strive for," he added.
In this QS ranking, there are five aspects assessed, namely Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, H-Index, and International Research Network (IRN). Academic Reputation is obtained from the collection of votes from more than 151,000 academics worldwide which has been carried out between 2018 and 2022. Each informant has given their opinion about universities in their respective fields of expertise.
In addition, Employer Reputation is also needed to assess the employability matrix based on employer reputation. More than 99,000 votes from global employers have been taken into account between 2018 and 2022 to provide a wealth of information regarding recruitment.
In addition to assessments from academics and employers, Citations per Paper is also one of the assessment indicators to measure the average number of citations obtained per publication, and to estimate the impact and quality of scientific work produced by universities. In this ranking, the QS Team analyzed more than 16.4 million papers published between 2016–2020, which resulted in almost 117.8 million citations in 2016–2021.
The H-Index is also used to measure the stability of impact and quality of published work by an institution's scientists and scholars, while the IRN is a measure of efficiency in building stable research collaborations in each of the 5 Broad Subject Areas. A total of 1,594 institutions ranked the 54 Narrow Subjects within the 5 Broad Subject Areas and made more than 18,300 ranking entries.
