FMIPA UI Serves as a Reference for Mathematics Curriculum Development at Universitas Bengkulu

Depok, July 31, 2026 — The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), through the Department of Mathematics, welcomed a delegation from the Mathematics Study Program of Universitas Bengkulu for a benchmarking activity on Monday (20/7). The visit served as a platform for sharing best practices in the development of Outcome Based Education (OBE), improving the quality of learning, and utilizing artificial intelligence(AI) responsibly in an academic environment.

The delegation from the Mathematics Study Program at the University of Bengkulu was welcomed by the Head of the Mathematics Department, FMIPA UI, Sarini Abdullah, S.Si., M.Stats., Ph.D., along with the program leaders and lecturers. The meeting was used to share good practices implemented by the Mathematics Department, FMIPA UI, starting from the development of a curriculum based on Outcome Based Education (OBE), learning quality improvement strategies, and strengthening graduate competencies that are relevant to industry needs and technological developments.

As one of the leading mathematics departments in Indonesia, the Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UI continues to develop an education system that combines mastery of mathematical theories with computational skills, data analysis, and programming abilities. The strengthening of these competencies is supported through software-based learning using platforms such as Python, R, and Google Colab, as well as industry collaborations through internship programs and the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative. The Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UI also continuously refines its OBE-based curriculum to ensure that graduates possess both strong academic competencies and skills relevant to the needs of the workforce.

“Through this benchmarking activity, we shared best practices that have been implemented at the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UI, ranging from the development of Outcome Based Education, strategies to improve student success in foundational courses, and governance for the utilization of generative AI while continuing to uphold academic ethics and integrity,” said Sarini.

Meanwhile, Head of the Mathematics Study Program at Universitas Bengkulu, Nur Afandi, S.Si., M.Si., presented the development of the Mathematics Study Program at Universitas Bengkulu, which was established in 2001. The study program has achieved a BAN-PT B national accreditation and ACQUIN international accreditation. In its development, the Mathematics Study Program at Universitas Bengkulu has developed distinctive strengths in the fields of Disaster Mathematics and Tropical Environmental Mathematical Modeling, while continuing to strengthen the implementation of an Outcome Based Education (OBE), human resource governance, and policies for the utilization of generative AI in learning,” he explained.

During the discussion session, both institutions addressed various strategic issues, ranging from curriculum evaluation, OBE implementation, to strategies for improving student success in foundational courses such as Calculus I and Elementary Linear Algebra. The Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UI shared its experiences in improving student achievement through matriculation programs, remedial classes, and the involvement of senior lecturers in foundational courses.

FMIPA UI also presented the implementation of Universitas Indonesia’s policy regarding the use of generative AI in learning. Based on Universitas Indonesia Regulation Number 16 of 2025, the use of AI is permitted by prioritizing the principles of ethics, responsibility, and transparency. Students are required to declare their use of AI in the preparation of final projects, while assessments remain focused on understanding the substance and developing critical thinking skills.

“We hope that the experiences we shared can serve as a reference for the development of mathematics education at various higher education institutions. Collaborations like this are also important to strengthen the quality of learning while encouraging the development of mathematics graduates who are adaptive to technological advancements and societal needs,” said Sarini.

In addition to curriculum and learning development, both universities also discussed strengthening graduate competencies through improving communication skills, mastering software tools such as Python, R, and Google Colab, as well as expanding learning experiences through internship programs and Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM). Data-driven learning quality evaluations, such as graduate learning outcomes (CPL), student evaluations of lecturers (EDOM), and feedback from alumni and graduate users, were also highlighted as important aspects in curriculum improvement.

The benchmarking activity resulted in several agreements, including maintaining the IndoMS 2022 recommendations as a reference for curriculum development, strengthening OBE implementation through documented and continuous evaluation of graduate learning outcomes, improving the quality of foundational course learning, developing ethical governance for the use of generative AI, and enhancing graduate competencies through mastery of software relevant to industry needs and off-campus learning experiences.

Through this activity, the Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UI reaffirmed its commitment to continuously contributing to the improvement of the quality of mathematics education in Indonesia through inter-university collaboration, adaptive curriculum development, and learning approaches that are aligned with advancements in science and technology.
