Depok, March 10, 2026 – Understanding career journeys from fieldwork to leadership is key to success in the oil and gas industry. This theme became the focus of the UI Geoscience Seminar (UIGS) – Starborn Mengajar, organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Indonesia on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Aula Prof. Dr. G.A. Siwabessy, FMIPA UI, Depok.
The seminar theme, “From Fieldwork to Leadership: Career Journeys in Oil & Gas,” was chosen to provide practical insights as well as career development strategies for students of the geology and geophysics study programs, helping them become better prepared to face the dynamic energy industry.
The Head of the Geology Study Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Reza Syahputra, M.Si., opened the event by emphasizing the relevance of the seminar’s theme for students. In his remarks, he stated that a career journey in the oil and gas industry requires not only technical competence but also the ability to make strategic decisions across various leadership positions.
“This seminar provides students with a real picture of career journeys in the oil and gas industry, from fieldwork to decision-making as leaders. By understanding this process, students can map out their career paths and prepare themselves more thoroughly,” said Dr. Reza Syahputra.

The seminar featured Ir. Wanasherpa Wirasasmita, M.T., Senior Development Geologist at PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk, who shared his professional experiences from working with several global oil and gas companies, including TotalEnergies, Eni, and Repsol.
In his presentation, Wanasherpa Wirasasmita explained the upstream oil and gas business phases, ranging from exploration and field development to production. He also highlighted career opportunities in the subsurface field and emphasized the importance of preparing oneself before entering the professional world.
“To succeed in the oil and gas industry, you must demonstrate enthusiasm, readiness, and a strong work ethic. Friendship and loyalty are key to long-term success,” said Wanasherpa Wirasasmita.
He added that academic achievement remains an initial benchmark of competence. “Professional experience will become the dominant factor over time, but GPA and the duration of study remain important as early indicators of competence,” he explained.

The interactive discussion also explored strategies for career transition (career switch) and the relevance of academic achievements to job prospects. According to Wanasherpa Wirasasmita, professional experience will ultimately determine one’s position in the industry, but academic standards remain an important consideration in the early stages of a career as well as in mid-level recruitment.
With its relevant theme and experienced speaker, UIGS – Starborn Mengajar is expected to serve as a practical guide for students of the geology and geophysics study programs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, in preparing themselves to face the challenges and opportunities within the competitive oil and gas industry.
